Virat Nagar, is an ancient name of Bairat. In ancient times it was the capital of a kingdom, Mahajanapada of Machcha or Matsayadesh. Later Mahaanapada kingdom became a part of Mauryan Empire. This is the place where ruin of the oldest Buddhist structure (Chaitya) were founded. Many mughal structures of ancient time are also found here.Frequent references of Matsayadesh have also been made in the Indian epic 'Mahabharat'. At that epic period, Matsayadesh consists the area around the district of Jaipur, Alwar and Bharatpur with Virat Nagar as its capital.
Virat Nagar Museum contains the precious excavated material like potteries, pikkins, old coins, seals, metallic pieces, weapons and statues which attracts visitors. Viratnagar Museum has artifacts from Bairat’s long history, including sculptures, coins, pottery, seals and metal objects.

Virat nagar , presently called Bairat is located 52 km north of Jaipur, and 66 km west of Alwar. It is well connected by road with other cities. Nearest railway station and airport is at Jaipur.
