As per newspaper reports there was a small magnitude earthquake in Jaipur district on Sunday 8th July 2018 at about 0943 hrs during morning times. The magnitude is reported to be as 4.0. From seismological point of view this is small magnitude earthquake. This is reported by India Meteorological Department (IMD).Earthquakes in Rajasthan are rare. Sometime there are earthquakes on India – Pakistan border near Jaisalmer.
There are reports that prior to the occurrence of any earthquake of moderte size, the reception on television is disturbed. The disturbances are in the form of audio, visual and spectral type. Sometime the picture vanishes for few seconds and then reappears or there is no voice. Usually such disturbances start few hours before earthquake. Another very reliable seismic precursory indicator is non-functioning or mal-functioning of mobile telephones. The telephone disturbance starts about 100 minutes before earthquake. Most of the mobile telephones do not work if the magnitude is moderate (more than 5.5) . But in the present case, there could be more disturnabces in reception of the phones may not be working at all.
If anybody has observed any of the above disturbances please inform me. This would add to useful scientific data. Persons working in telephone department or telephone companies are expected to have noticed such disturbances . Such disturbances have been reported to have been observed from several earthquakes in India, Nepal, Pakistan, Burma etc.
