The Shrinathji Temple is situated on the bank of the Banas river in the Nathwada region of Rajasthan, at a distance of 48 kms in the northeast of Udaipur. Shrinathji temple was built in the 17th century and is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Shrinathji Temple is also known as 'Haveli of Shrinathji' and makes a prominent pilgrimage of the Hindus / Vaishnavas. The idol of the deity was beautifully carved out of black marble. The Srinathji Temple is considered as the second richest Indian temple after the Tirupati Temple of Andhra Pradesh.

Shrinathji Temple History

According to some legends, in 1672, Rana Raj Singh, the then king of Udaipur brought the idol of the deity from Vrindavan, the land of Lord Krishna, in order to protect the idol from the destructive rage of Aurangzeb.

It is also said that when the idol was being shifted to this condensed place, then the wheel of the vehicle sank deep down in the mud in the same spot where the historic temple is situated.

Shrinathji Temple Architecture

The architecture and image of Lord Krishna are worth seeing here in Shrinathji temple. The image symbolizes a form of Lord Krishna when he lifted the ‘Govardhana’ (a hill). the lord is affirmed with his left hand raised and the right is pitched in a clasp.

There are about 500 cows undo the temple authorities and among them, one is regarded as Shrinathji’s cow, which served the lord for centuries. Places that are worth seeing in the temple include the Moti Mahal.

Sudarshan Chakraraj, Dhwajaji, Kamal Chowk, Ratan Chowk, Mani Kotha and the temples of Shri Navnit Priyaji. Shrinathji Temple can be visited by only Hindus with the exception of foreigners.

Shrinathji Temple Festivals

Devotees throng to the shrine in large numbers during occasions of Janmashtami and other festivals, like Holi and Diwali. The deity is treated as a living image and is attended with daily normal functions, like bathing, dressing, meals called “blog” and the resting times in regular intervals.
